A fully suited up McQueen aboard a Honda Elsinore, wearing an Elsinore shirt. This bike was one of Honda’s first fully dedicated off-road machines—not so coincidentally named after the race where Steve “Harvey Mushman” McQueen enjoyed so much success. Note the long travel front forks, bobbed fenders, lack of lighting, and neatly integrated number plates. McQueen family collection

ON ANY SUNDAY

* * *

There’s no better way to get a handle on this charming 1971 documentary feature than to let Steve McQueen set up the story himself, as he did for this movie trailer:

A few years ago, Bruce Brown made the classic film about surfing, Endless Summer. Now, he’s made a new film about my favorite sport, motorcycle racing. It’s called On Any Sunday. It shows, for the first time, what the sport is really like, and I’m proud to have a little ride-on in the film. It wasn’t much, but it gave me a chance to work with some real stars. Whether you ride or not, I think you’ll enjoy On Any Sunday.

Brown was born in San Francisco, but he grew up around the beaches of Southern California. He was into photography at an early age, and began filming the surfing scene with still, and later, motion picture, cameras. He’d already self-produced several low-budget surfer flicks by the time he made Endless Summer in 1966, but it was this now-cult classic that established him as an expert documentary filmmaker. He had no formal training in the movie business, which he later declared to his advantage.
